Everything I learned about great writing. . .
Well, that might be an exaggeration. But as I sit here at my desk, working on a module for my online website class, my eyes are drawn to a quote that I have hanging on my wall. Here it is:
"You're not friends. You'll never be friends. You'll be in love 'til it kills you both. You'll fight, and you'll shag, and you'll hate each other 'til it makes you quiver, but you'll never be friends. Love isn't brains, children, it's blood. blood screaming inside you to wirk its will."
Anyone recognize the quote? I'll bet not. But it's not the only one on my wall that comes from the same source. Ready?
Buffy the Vampire Slayer. (This is Spike - gotta love Spike - talking to Buffy and Angel)
You heard me right. Buffy. I've heard Suz Brockmann say that the writing in Buffy is fabulous. If Suz says it's good, it must be good. I thought about that for years before I actually got hooked. And when I got hooked, it was with Angel, not Buffy. But who's counting.
Here's another one, this time from the mouth of Angel himself. . .
"Passion.
It lies in all of us.
Sleeping. . .
. . . waiting. . . And though unwanted. . .
. . . unbidden. . . it will stir. . .
. . . open its jaws, and howl.
Passion is the source of our finest moments. The joy of love. . . the clarity of hatred. . . the ecstasy of grief.
It hurts sometimes more than we can bear.
If we could live without passion, maybe we'd know some kind of peace. But we would be hollow.
Empty rooms, shuttered and dank. . .
Without passion, we'd be truly dead."
Thanks for indulging me today, gang. Slainte, jax
